My career as a hair stylist has been a journey of growth, not just for my client's hair, but for me as well. I'm a stylist with boundaries and convictions. I believe in the power of healthy hair care, and that starts with education and a genuine commitment to the process. I yearn for clients who understand this, who value the journey of nurturing their hair from the inside out, and who see the connection between inner well-being and outward radiance. Healthy hair truly pulls on your heartstrings; it's a reflection of physical and emotional health. Building my career on this foundation of holistic hair care, honed over 37 years as a licensed cosmetologist, has been the most rewarding aspect of my journey. Sharing this understanding with my clients and witnessing their transformations has been a privilege.
However, with my experience as a Master Stylist, Master Educator, and licensed cosmetology teacher, I've observed a concerning trend in the new generation of stylists. While there are undoubtedly some powerhouse talents emerging, many seem to lack a fundamental understanding of hair health. They prioritize quick fixes and trendy styles over building a strong foundation of knowledge. They crave the " microwave career " instant success without putting in the necessary foundational groundwork. This often
leads to a clientele built on fleeting trends rather than genuine care, a foundation as fragile as the latest hair fad.
These young stylists often isolate themselves, working solo in home studios or salon suites, missing out on the invaluable mentorship and camaraderie that comes from working alongside experienced professionals. I recall my early days at Orrie's Perm Palace, a whirlwind of permanent waves," Jheri curls, " While not my passion, the experience instilled in me essential skills: speed, efficiency, multitasking, and the pure hustle required to thrive in this industry. It was a foundational platform that launched my career. I learned by watching, mimicking, and absorbing the knowledge of those around me. This collaborative environment is crucial for growth, and I fear it's being lost in today's increasingly isolated work culture.
My hope for these emerging stylists is that they discover their niche, build upon it with integrity, and earn the respect and loyalty I've been fortunate enough to receive from my clients. As I approach the later stages of my career as owner and operator of Journey Hair Salon, I'm filled with gratitude for the lessons learned and the opportunity to pour into the lives of others.
Hairstylists are so much more than just people who cut and style hair. We are scientists, teachers, ministers, doctors, artists, therapists, mothers, fathers, aunts, and uncles. We pour into our clients, offering support, encouragement, and a listening ear. We've witnessed triumphs and tragedies, helped clients navigate life's challenges, and celebrated their milestones. We see them grow and evolve, and we're honored to be apart of their journey.
This career has been a spiritual one for me, connecting me to God and the diverse tapestry of humanity. I've learned so much from the people in my chair, and I hope, in some small way, I've touched their lives as well. While the financial rewards haven't always been consistent (summer slumps are real!), the emotional and spiritual fulfillment has been immeasurable. I’m grateful for God's provision and guidance
throughout the years.
There's still so much I want to do and share, dreams that may never fully materialize, but I share this story for anyone who feels a similar calling. To those like-minded individuals: keep going. Don’t give up. This industry is vast and full of potential, but it requires dedication, perseverance, and a brick-by-brick approach. There’s no microwave to success in this field; it’s earned, one strand at a time.
